Global Visiting Student Program

The Global Visiting Students Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provides international students with the opportunity to attend Carolina for one or two semesters, with full participation in the life of one of the most vibrant and academically rewarding public universities in the United States. Students can pursue courses in areas ranging from the arts to the sciences.

Eligibility

  • Class level: Undergraduate applicants must have reached the status of sophomore, junior, or senior, or the equivalent.
  • Institutional or Home University Approval: Your home university or the agency sponsoring your enrollment must be willing to approve your application to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an undergraduate student.  You must be a matriculated student attending a partner university, or selected by an organization. In either case, an agreement must be in place between the institution or organization and the Global Visiting Student program.
  • Grade Point Average: 3.2 or higher. The University of North Carolina uses a 4.0 grade scale. Letter grades are given, with A earning 4 points, B earning 3 points, C earning 2 points, and D earning 1 point. Students applying to UNC must have achieved a grade point average of 3.2 or its equivalent at your university. If your university uses a different grading system, someone in your study abroad, international, or registrar's office should be able to help you translate your grade point average into the American 4.0 grade scale.
  • English Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate their English language proficiency by achieving the following:
    • Minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL iBT (preferred exam)
      • Applications with TOEFL iBT scores below 90 (or the equivalent on the other standard tests, see below) will not be considered; applications with scores between 90 and 100 (or the equivalent) will be reviewed along with other supporting documents, determined on a case-by-case basis.
    • Alternative acceptable proficiency assessments and scores are:
      • Other TOEFL formats: 250 CBT, 600 PBT (ITP scores not accepted)
      • APIEL: 5
      • IELTS: 7.5
If you are required to take the TOEFL exam, be sure to schedule it early so that you will be able to submit documentation of your score by the application deadline.
