University of Nicosia (Summer in Cyprus)

Interesting program for Pre-Med or EXSS students!

For this program, you travel to the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The program is taught on site at the University of Nicosia's Medical School, which is operated in conjunction with St George's University of London.

Location

The University of Nicosia is the largest research university in Cyprus with over 15,000 students (including 1,000 international degree-seeking students). It has more than 200 faculty. All of the classroom buildings in Nicosia were built over the last decade and match modern American facilities in terms of design, comfort and information technology.

Courses & Credits

There are two tracks for this summer program: Pre-Med and Physical Therapy

Students will take the one main course for their track and then take the Management of Care course as their second course. Courses are taught in English, and you will be in class with other international students. Course syllabi are available on the program's website (see links above).
The program includes excursions to 7 cities in Cyprus, as well as co-curricular site visits. During these guided excursions students are given context about their host country and its culture and history.

Pre-Med track:
BIOL - 310 Special Topics in Clinical Anatomy and Skills (4 transfer credit hours) - Prerequisite course: BIOL 101 or BIOL 102
This course is of special interest to pre-med students, as there will be opportunity to practice clinical skills in a simulation hospital. It's a wonderful way for students to gain exposure to a medical school setting. This will transfer as a BIOLOGY elective with Lab; however you will need to take the program approval form to the BIOLOGY DUS for a signature before you leave for Cyprus and then you also complete your credit transfer form once you return. Students will also visit public, private hospitals and clinics.

Physical Therapy track:
PTHE- 305 Biomechanics in Rehabilitation
(3 transfer credit hours)
This course is of special interest to students in Exercise and Sport Science due to the theoretic and practical components of the course. This course will transfer as EXSS 485: Functional Anatomy.

Students on both tracks will enroll in this second course:
Management of Care (3 transfer credit hours)
This course will add a layer of cultural understanding from a healthcare perspective, as it compares and contrasts healthcare systems, but also looks at cultural components of managing and providing care. The course also includes site visits to public and private hospitals and clinics around the country.

Courses in this program are Transfer Credit.
Transfer Credit Courses (not taught by UNC Faculty): ACTION REQUIRED
  • You must submit the Credit Request Form to earn any credit for your time abroad.
  • You must earn the equivalent of a C or higher to earn any credit.
  • These courses will transfer back to UNC as “TREQ” credits.
