London School of Economics (Summer School)

UNC students must apply to LSE via the UNC Study Abroad Office using the Apply Now button above. DO NOT apply directly to LSE Summer School via their website.

UNC students have the opportunity to study at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) for 3-9 weeks over the summer and earn 3.5-10.5 credits. The LSE Summer School welcomes 6,000 students from around the globe; a truly international environment. London is one of the most exciting and culturally-diverse cities in the world. Being a part of LSE Summer School will give you the opportunity to study and live centrally in one of the leading global cities in the world.

LSE requires applicants have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.3. Students with less than a 3.3 overall GPA, but with a 3.3 GPA in pre-requisites for the courses they intend to take at LSE may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Location

LSE is located in the heart of central London. London is one of the world’s leading business and financial centers and home to many universities. With a population of 9 million, it is a major global city and one of the most cosmopolitan in the world. London boasts a rich culture and many attractions and lends itself to an atmosphere of excitement and sophistication.

Courses & Credits

The summer school at LSE is divided into three 3-week sessions with students enrolling in one course per session. UNC students are strongly encouraged to attend at least TWO 3-week sessions. Most courses consist of a three hour lecture as well as a one and a half hour seminar. The lecture and seminar can be held in the morning or afternoon of each weekday.

Courses taught during the Summer School are based on regular LSE undergraduate courses, and taught to the same standards by leading LSE faculty. Lecturers are experts in their chosen fields and committed to teaching with academic rigor and contemporary relevance. LSE faculty are actively involved in academic research and many act as advisers and consultants to companies and Government bodies.

Many of the courses at the LSE Summer School will fulfill requirements for Economics credit at UNC. For a list of LSE courses and the UNC requirement fulfilled, as well as additional information about the credit transfer process for UNC Economics majors, please review the Study Abroad Departmental Reviewer Directory for Economics.

Courses in this program are Transfer Credit.
Transfer Credit Courses (not taught by UNC Faculty): ACTION REQUIRED
  • You must submit the Credit Request Form to earn any credit for your time abroad.
  • You must earn the equivalent of a C or higher to earn any credit.
  • These courses will transfer back to UNC as “TREQ” credits.

Housing

You can choose from several different locations, offering single, twin and triple accommodation with shared or private en suite facilities. Room types and facilities vary slightly between halls, but all residences are within 5-25 minute walking distance of LSE.

Always refer to the Budget Sheet on this page, and not the host institution’s posted rates, as it is customized for UNC students. Review the Budget Sheet for additional Cashier Billed Expenses and Out-of-Pocket Costs. The Study Abroad Office strongly encourages students to budget carefully for their time abroad.
