King's College London

UNC students have the opportunity to study at King’s College London for 6 weeks over the summer and earn 6 credits. The Undergraduate Summer School at King’s College London welcomes students from over 40 countries and from over 200 universities around the globe; a truly international environment. With the campus and accommodation in the very heart of central London, you will have an unbeatable summer enjoying both an intense academic experience and everything London has to offer.


The University

One of the two founding Colleges of the University of London, KCL has a worldwide reputation for the range and quality of its teaching and research, well known for its dedication to high quality education in a stimulating learning environment. KCL has long been respected as a national leader in education, and excellent standards and unparalleled opportunities are the norm. UNC has established a strategic academic partnership with KCL. Program participants have the opportunity to study and live in one of the most vibrant and diverse cities in the world. Summer School students are based at the Strand Campus in the heart of cultural London, within easy reach of all the great social and entertainment opportunities that London has to offer. 

The Location

KCL is located in central London, with its main campus on “The Strand” along the River Thames. London is one of the world’s leading business and financial centers and home to many universities. With a population of 9 million, it is a major global city and one of the most cosmopolitan in the world. London boasts a rich culture and many attractions and lends itself to an atmosphere of excitement and sophistication.  

Courses & Credits

KCL offers two 3-week summer sessions, and UNC students must attend both sessions. Students will choose one course per session which will allow them to gain both breadth and depth in their chosen area of study. The Summer School generally offers over 40 courses in the following subject areas, each pulling from the strengths of KCL and London:
  • ancient languages
  • business management
  • culture
  • governance
  • health and science
  • law
  • math and engineering

On two related programs, UNC Literature & Diplomacy at KCL and UNC Psychology at KCL, students have the opportunity to take a UNC-taught course in the first session and one of the many KCL-taught courses in the second session.

Courses in this program are Transfer Credit.
Transfer Credit Courses (not taught by UNC Faculty): ACTION REQUIRED

  • You must submit the Credit Request Form to earn any credit for your time abroad.
  • You must earn the equivalent of a C or higher to earn any credit.
  • These courses will transfer back to UNC as “TREQ” credits.

Program participants are housed in a KCL student residence in central London, located within walking distance of KCL’s Strand and Waterloo campuses. Most residences provide a private en-suite room with shared kitchen facilities.

Program Costs

Review the Budget Sheet posted above for detailed information on costs and fees. Costs vary per term and are subject to change.
Tuition and fees for the exchange program is equal to UNC’s rate, based on NC residency status, and will be charged to the participant’s UNC student account. Review the Budget Sheet for additional Cashier Billed Expenses and Out-of-Pocket Costs. The Study Abroad Office strongly encourages students to budget carefully for their time abroad.

Application Process

Do not apply directly to King's College London Summer School. Students must apply via the UNC Study Abroad using the Apply Now! button above.

Follow these steps to apply for this program:
  1. Complete the required UNC application by clicking “Apply Now” at the top of the page. If you have not done so already, create a profile to start your application.
  2. The Study Abroad Office will review applications and nominate qualified students to the host institution.
  3. Nominated students are required to complete an application for the host institution. Follow instructions provided by the Study Abroad Advisor and make note of all deadlines.
