International Christian University
International Christian University (ICU) is located in the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka City. This program allows our students to immerse themselves in a Japanese university environment, while allowing them flexibility in course selection and a bilingual (Japanese and English) environment. ICU fosters a community in which people from different nations and cultures live, study and work together, encompassing a variety of educational visions where students learn to encounter one another as individuals. ICU sees itself as a bridge both to and from Japan.
International Christian University is located in Mitaka City, a suburb adjacent to Tokyo. Mount Fuji can be seen from the campus. The train trip from Tokyo Station to Musashisakai Station takes from 29 to 43 minutes. From Musashisakai Station, ICU is seven to ten minutes by taxi or bus.
The campus is a wooded area of 638,000 square meters, one of the most spacious in Japan. From the campus entrance, a broad avenue arched by cherry trees extends for 600 meters westward, ending at a circle of azaleas. Major buildings include: the Library; University Hall (Honkan), the classroom building where most of the summer classes will be held; the Educational Research Building, containing faculty offices; the student center, Diffendorfer Memorial Hall; the ICU Church; dining hall (Shokudo); and student dormitories. Other campus facilities of interest include the Yuasa Museum, with collections of Japanese folk craft and archaeological excavations, and the Taizanso gardens and tea houses.
ICU is a small liberal arts college. Its undergraduate program is organized into the following divisions: Divisions of the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Languages, Education and International Studies. Most courses are taught in Japanese, though most departments offer some courses in English as well.
Additionally, the ICU Japanese Language Programs are designed to help students from abroad achieve greater competence in comprehending and producing both spoken and written Japanese, particularly in respect to carrying on academic studies in Japan. The Japanese Language Programs consist of four distinct programs designed to meet the various specific needs of university students.
- Program One: Full time Intensive Japanese (20 hours of instruction per week in all four language skills, i.e. speaking, listening, reading and writing)
- Program Two: Semi-intensive Japanese (10 hours of instruction per week in one of 6 levels from beginning to high intermediate)
- Program Three: Advanced Japanese (reading, writing, listening, speaking to be taken over two terms)
- Program Four: Special Japanese (focused on kanji, text reading and academic writing for Japanese returnee students)
All students who have no prior knowledge of the Japanese language are automatically placed in beginning classes and need not take a placement test. All new students entering in September with some competence in Japanese language must take a placement test which is conducted during the university orientation program.
The ICU academic year is divided into trimesters of approximately eleven weeks each. UNC students going to ICU for fall semester will attend the autumn term and study from early September to late November. Students opting to study at ICU for a year will attend all three trimesters from early September to late June. No Japanese Language background is required to study at ICU! Students can study Japanese at a variety of intensity levels in addition to taking content courses in regular ICU departments, offered both in Japanese and English.

- You must submit the Credit Request Form to earn any credit for your time abroad.
- You must earn the equivalent of a C or higher to earn any credit.
- These courses will transfer back to UNC as “TREQ” credits.
Most exchange students live in ICU dorms, with rooms housing 1 to 3 students each. The ICU men's and women's undergraduate dorms contain communal bathrooms, laundry facilities, a social room, study room and small kitchenette. Rooms are furnished with beds, desks, bookshelves, chests and heating. Also, there is Global House, a shared-living co-ed dormitory consisting of separate living units, each with 4 private rooms and a common living/dining area, shower, toilet, and kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave oven, electromagnetic cooktop and washing machine. Each unit is air- conditioned and equipped with internet and TV connection in both the common area and the private rooms. Please note: Students who enroll at ICU for the Fall semester only are not eligible for the on-campus dormitory. They will be accommodated in home-stays or in off-campus student residences.
Students are free to take meals by themselves either in the ICU Dining Hall, which offers Japanese and Western food, or in one of the many small eateries located near campus.

Tuition and fees for the exchange program is equal to UNC’s rate, based on NC residency status, and will be charged to the participant’s UNC student account. Review the Budget Sheet for additional Cashier Billed Expenses and Out-of-Pocket Costs.

- Complete the required UNC application by clicking “Apply Now” at the top of the page. If you have not done so already, create a profile to start your application.
- The Study Abroad Office will review applications and nominate qualified students to the host institution.
- Nominated students are required to complete an application for the host institution. Follow instructions provided by the Study Abroad Advisor and make note of all deadlines.
