Chinese University of Hong Kong (Summer Undergraduate Research)

This program is eligible for the Phillips Ambassadors Scholarship

CUHK has established the Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) to allow undergraduate students to undertake a short-term research project at CUHK during the summer. SURP is designed to enable students from all academic disciplines to develop research skills and knowledge in a chosen area of study, as well as to prepare for postgraduate studies.

SURP participants conduct a research project under the supervision of a CUHK faculty member for 8 weeks, with 80+ research projects offered across various academic disciplines. SURP also offers a cultural program as well as activities to introduce students to various aspects of a research career.

SURP will take place from mid-June to mid-August for 8 weeks. Please see CUHK's SURP website for specific dates.

Recipients of the Hong Kong Alumni Club scholarship for Carolina Covenant Scholars are not eligible to apply for the SURP track due to arrival and departure events in Hong Kong.

Location

The campus of CUHK is situated on the north side of the city, in one of the most beautiful areas of Hong Kong. On a hilltop overlooking Tolo Harbour, CUHK offers students a peaceful campus environment while being only minutes away by bus or train from the energy and excitement of downtown Hong Kong.

Courses & Credits

Students may need to be flexible as not everyone may receive one's first choice of research placement. CUHK will register all SURP students in a 3-credit IASP 4091 course entitled "Independent Research on International Studies II" to carry out a project under the supervision of a host supervisor. Students' participation in the program will be evaluated and a transcript will be issued to their home institution upon successful completion of the program.

Courses in this program are Transfer Credit.
Transfer Credit Courses (not taught by UNC Faculty): ACTION REQUIRED
  • You must submit the Credit Request Form to earn any credit for your time abroad.
  • You must earn the equivalent of a C or higher to earn any credit.
These courses will transfer back to UNC as “TREQ” credits.

Housing

CUHK will endeavor to place all SURP students in university-sponsored housing whenever possible, typically in a double or triple occupancy room with shared bathroom facilities. Most of the dorms are equipped with shared kitchen, laundry, and lounge space. However, when such housing is not available, CUHK will provide the students with reasonable alternatives, and will assist students as necessary. The students will be responsible for their housing cost, whether it will be on or off campus. Students will also be able to purchase meals at one of the many student canteens located on campus, and are also of course encouraged to explore the amazing food options throughout the city.
