Non-Approved Programs

Although we have a wide range of approved programs, we understand that our portfolio may not address the academic needs of all students. If you are interested in a program that is not listed as an approved program, you can petition our office for permission to participate in a program offered through another university or third-party provider.

Not all applications for non-approved programs are approved, and the petition process requires you to carefully research the program and provide our office with sufficient information for us to determine that the proposed study abroad program meets the academic rigor of courses offered at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Please note: the process for non-approved programs is only for students who wish to earn credit. If you do not wish to earn credit at UNC, you are not required to apply through our office.

Requirements

  • Summer programs: must be at least three weeks long and students must earn a minimum of three credits. Programs not meeting these minimum requirements may be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Semester programs: students must earn a minimum of twelve credits.
  • Programs must be academic in nature and meet the academic rigor of UNC Chapel Hill.
  • Students must provide a valid academic reason for pursuing the program. Students should be able to demonstrate that the program is not similar to any UNC approved programs and meets an academic need that a UNC approved program does not.

Courses & Credits

Courses earned on Non-Approved programs are Transfer Credit.
Transfer Credit Courses (not taught by UNC Faculty): ACTION REQUIRED
  • You must submit the Credit Request Form to earn any credit for your time abroad.
  • You must earn the equivalent of a C or higher to earn any credit.
  • These courses will transfer back to UNC as “TREQ” credits.

Program Costs

All students will pay the application fee at time of application submission. If an application is approved and the student signs the contract, the student will be billed a $1,000 Study Abroad Administrative fee directly to the student’s UNC Cashier account.

In addition, UNC Study Abroad requires that students have international health and accident insurance. All students will be registered and billed for GeoBlue Insurance for the duration of the program (approximately $1.45/day) unless the program includes comparable insurance (proof of this is required).

Students will be responsible for paying the program or provider directly for any tuition, fees, or other program related costs. Students receiving financial aid will receive this aid according to the disbursement schedule of the Office of Student Aid and Scholarships.

Please note: Regardless of how the tuition and fees are paid, the $1,000 Study Abroad Administrative fee and GeoBlue insurance fees (if comparable insurance not provided) will be billed to the student’s UNC Cashier account.

Application Process

All students studying abroad on a Non-Approved program must both apply directly to the program sponsor and complete all UNC Study Abroad requirements. The Non-Approved program application must be approved by UNC Study Abroad in order for credit to be considered.

If you have questions about the Non-Approved program application or wish to discuss your program in further details, please make an appointment with the Senior Advisor, Ashley Steed Szulak.
