Student Initiated Programs

While the Study Abroad Office offers hundreds of approved programs with a wide range of academic and location options, we understand that our portfolio may not address your academic, financial, or career. If you are interested in a study, internship, or research program that is not listed on our website, there are countless study abroad options available, allowing you to continue your enrollment at UNC while earning credit abroad. Programs must be offered through an accredited U.S. institution, third-party provider organization, or institution overseas and provide an academic transcript.

You will also need to complete a UNC Study Abroad application prior to your departure, where you must detail your academic and other reasons for pursuing the program. Advisors in the Study Abroad Office will review your application to determine if the proposed program meets the academic rigor of courses offered by UNC and provides proper support services for participants. Approval to participate in a student-initiated program is not guaranteed.

Students approved to participate in these programs remain enrolled at UNC during their time abroad, have access to services through SAO, and receive transfer credit for the coursework that they complete abroad.

Please note: this process is designed for students who wish to earn credit from their experience abroad and who wish to use UNC financial aid and scholarships for their experience. If you do not plan to earn credit to apply to your UNC degree program and do not plan to use any university financial aid or scholarships, you are not required to apply through our office.

Requirements

  • Programs must be academic in nature and meet the academic rigor of UNC Chapel Hill
  • The location of the program is not restricted by the UNC Travel Policy
  • Summer programs: the program must offer a minimum of three credits
  • Semester programs: the program must offer a minimum of 12 credits

Courses & Credits

Courses taken on a Student Initiated Program will be eligible for transfer credit that will come back as a UNC equivalent course, departmental elective, or general education/elective course with a specific study abroad grading basis. These hours may be applied as general elective, general education, or major/minor credit. You can find out more about the process for transferring credit here.

  • Study Abroad Admin Fee: $1000 – charged to your UNC student account
  • Required GeoBlue Insurance: Amount varies based on length of program (approximately $1.50/day) – charged to your UNC student account
Financial Aid and scholarships can be used to fund participation in a Student Initiated Program.

Application Process

To participate in a Student Initiated Program, you will be required to complete TWO applications prior to departure for your program
  • UNC Study Abroad Application: Click APPLY NOW above - this application helps determine if a program is eligible for UNC credit, ensures continued enrollment at UNC, and allows you to receive support and services from UNC SAO
    • Deadlines: You must complete the UNC application online by:
      • Summer/Fall/Academic Year programs: February 10
      • Spring/Calendar Year programs: September 10
    • Important Note: If you choose to bypass this application and go abroad on your own, then you will not maintain enrollment at UNC, will not have access to any institutional, state, and/or financial aid and scholarships that you may be eligible for, and risk your courses and credits not transferring back to UNC.
      • If you already participated in a program and wish to earn credit after completion, there is an additional $500 Retroactive Application Fee. You cannot receive financial aid retroactively if you participated in your program without approval beforehand.
  • Program Application: You will apply directly with the program institution/organization. You must meet the application requirements of the host program. Deadlines will vary by program
